A Visit to Amelia's Lake House

We were invited upstate over MLK weekend to hang out with Chris, Mary, and Amelia. Mooney and Yu also were there. It was a party!

It also was a bit frozen.

Muno showed the boys the dock.

One of these adults is trying to make a boy laugh. The other adult is trying to bundle a boy up. Amelia looked on.

Throwing rocks into the lake.

With a beer in hand, Mooney was the go-to person for supplying the kids rocks.

And then Chris Larry took out the saw. The house needed firewood.

What's he doing?

Eh - who cares? They had rocks to throw.

Sam pointed where Otis should aim his throw.

Pure happiness.

Be careful.

If Otis was on Facebook, this would have to be his new profile picture.

After the dock, we walked to check out the house for sale next door. It's on the market for cheap! Hmmmm.....

And then there was hot chocolate.

A Trip to MOMA

A few weeks ago, we took the boys to MOMA for the first time. We got a year membership which is quite a deal. Anyway, there is a special room for kids. Otis and Sam were enthralled with the digital painting.

Sam had to wait his turn.

But he was ready to go as soon as it was his turn.

We took them to a couple exhibits and walked around for about five minutes. They also liked some of the sculptures.

And Sam really liked the helicopter as well.

After all the hard work at the museum, it was time for noodles.

Back in Brooklyn, Sam stole Sujan's glasses.

The boys hadn't seen Molly much since our trip to E-music in June. It was time to visit her new apartment. They enjoyed watching the S train from her window. And they loved eating chicken cocos (tacos). And they loved showering Molly with kisses. Hooray!

We visited Deborah's house. There were so many trains!

Otis couldn't decide which train he wanted to play with.

Sam didn't want a piano lesson from his mother.

But he did like saying hi to the cat.

Otis and Erik couldn't wait until the ball dropped. They re-enacted what it was going to look like later in the night.

Then Otis drew what it was going to look like when the ball dropped on the Etch-A-Sketch for Carrie.

Double Trouble teaming up.

Sam and Amy F danced while Otis demonstrated his new floor boogie.

It wasn't even 9 p.m. and the party was raging.

Nothing says like a party like a dancing cowboy.

A serious cowboy means time to slow it down.

We thought the boys would fall asleep but they were still going strong at 10. At 11, they wanted some fried chicken.

A few people left but we had reinforcements. Look, it's Yu Bando! Mooney is not pictured.

The countdown to midnight. Sam could barely stay awake but he didn't want to miss out on the action.

Otis looked over to see if Sam was still awake.

Right before the ball dropped, Sam burst into tears. 2011 was a good year for him and he was sad to see it end. Either that or 2-year-olds shouldn't stay up so late.

An Overnight Trip to Philly

It had been too long since we had last been to the Please Touch Museum.

Hey - look it's The Statue of Liberty, Daddy Dan style.

I can't tell if Sam was trying to help or trying to intimidate.

Perhaps they were a little too young for this endeavor. No matter - Sujan helped them out.

Too bad they can't keep what they got.

I can't wait until I can put them to work on helping me fill up the tank.

They also love this Alice image.

After the museum, we went over to Great-Aunt Rosemary and Great-Uncle Brian's before heading over to Aunt Amy's to spend the night.

The next day, we ate breakfast at The Trolley Diner. The boys were enthralled.

Everyone knows that Boxing Day is a good day to go to the zoo.

Sam knows that it is also a fun day to throw your toy paratrooper at the zoo.

Sam told Great-Uncle Brian all about the baboons.

I tried to take a picture of Great-Aunt Rosemary and the boys but Sam boxed her out.

Stop boxing me out!

I Feel Better

Over the holidays, there were some sick boys in Brooklyn.

Both boys ended up with ear infections - Otis got the worst of it. This picture was taken after the second of Otis' doctor's visit - lollipop in hand.

A few days later, the boys had to go back to the doctor's when their symptoms flared up again. Antibiotics were prescribed and Otis assured us for the next ten days, "I feel better" seconds after drinking each dosage.

To add insult to injury, they had to go back again for their flu shots. Otis went first and made the mistake of looking at the needle. He cried a little. Sam, on the other hand, was distracted by Otis getting two (two!!!!) lollipops and barely flinched.

I guess they handled it a little better than last year.

The annual tradition continues!

Otis was proud to say that he didn't cry this year. Although I'm not sure how accurate his memory is. Sam, on the other hand was not a big fan of the Claus.

This year, Charlie Claus tried something new. He sat down and dispensed the gifts one by one. Sam was wary.

Ok - maybe he isn't so bad, right?

Sam was fine when he was distracted by presents.

But when there was even a moment of downtime, Sam couldn't stop giving Charlie Claus the stink eye.

Otis was a happy guy though.

I assume the theme of this year's presents is pretty obvious.

Last Sunday, we gave the boys some new blocks. Great-Aunt Rosemary and Great-Uncle Brian had given us these blocks awhile ago but we didn't think the boys were ready until now. The blocks date from the Cousin Jason and Cousin Leah era.

The blocks kept the boys engrossed for quite a spell. Sujan ran an errand and noticed that one of Sam's paintings was featured in the Design Lab's window! Way to go Sammy!

After nap time, it was New Jersey time. Couple tees!

Hi Viva!

On the the Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend we visited Glen, Jane, and Viva. We hadn't seen them since they had moved out of Brooklyn.

At first the boys were more into the idea of playing on a new couch than breaking bread (or sharing cheddar bunnies) with Viva.

No matter. More Viva time for Sujan.

Sam either was jealous of the attention his mom was giving another kid or he had just noticed the juice boxes.

Looks like apple slices were the answer.

Tea time for two.

Or maybe three.

I can't deal with the cuteness.

I kept hoping they would be still for a second so I could get a good picture. No such luck.

Coney Island in November

It was in the mid 60's on the day after Thanksgiving. It was a perfect day for Coney Island and for the aquarium.

Thanksgiving Morning

We got out of the house early. First stop - croissants!

Sam was so excited waiting for the F Train that he was shaking. We asked him if he was cold and he said no - just excited.

On the ride back, Sujan was told to wear the Big O's hat. Btw, we have now lost two Mets hats. Sujan convinced Otis to wear the other hat by calling it a special Jose Reyes hat. Reyes, for those who don't know, is their favorite player. But I don't think I've ever seen him wearing a hat that looks like the one Sujan is modeling.

Give the boy back his hat!

Last Sunday, we took a drive out of the city to visit Storm King Art Center. The boys loved it.

Sam was very intrigued by the idea that this sculpture could maybe touch the airplanes.

Otis pretended he was an airplane.

Good thing Sam's vest matched the art.

The boys were a bit wary of this one at first.

Otis was insistent that we only walk in the grass and he ordered us off of the path.

I tried to demonstrate that getting close to the sculptures wasn't a scary proposition.

Otis wasn't so sure.

Little Drummer Boys

On Saturday, we went to Charlie's 3rd birthday party. The boys were anti-social and didn't really engage with any of the kids. What turkeys.

They did like the balloons though. I was very entertained taking pictures of their reactions to playing with the balloons.

After the party, a number of us headed back home to play some drums. The boys kept passive-aggressively drumming really loudly until Amelia got off the phone.

That's better.

Amelia had to take a call, so Troubadour Larry took her place for a song.

Marathon Sunday

Last year, the boys didn't like it. This year, they sort of did.

Otis kept insisting that he only liked the "parathon" on TV and not in real life. I think the bigger issue is that he and his brother liked sitting inside at the party, eating bagels and cookies.

On our way out, Otis gave the 4th Ave corridor another chance but he was still skeptical.

Then Mooney stopped by and convinced Otis to like the parathon.

Sam was impressed by the runners. So fast! All in all, the marathon was fun but nothing beats this one.

Fells Point on a Sunday Morning

The boys have been obsessed with trolleys since riding a yellow one in Memphis this past summer. A couple of weeks ago, we went to Maryland to celebrate Grandma's birthday. And lucky for them, the National Trolley Museum is a five minute drive away.

Otis held his new trolley toy while studying the trolley driver's style.

Sam loved his trolley ticket and his trolley postcard. Grandma loved watching the boys delight in visiting the same museum that she used to take me to as a little boy.

The Little Red Lighthouse

The day after the Yo Gabba debacle, we took the boys to visit the Little Red Lighthouse that lives under the Great Gray Bridge.

We had to wait about half an hour to go up, but the boys entertained themselves.

They were quite excited to go up into the lighthouse.

Finally, it was our turn. We climbed up the winding stairs. And then Otis began to get really upset. But it was too late to turn back. So we continued up. The boys both got pretty clingy but Sam was a bit more relaxed than his brother.

We met an older couple who lived in the same building that Sujan's family lived in when they first moved to Fort Lee. They offered to take a picture of us.

Who would have thought a lighthouse would have a big light in it?

I couldn't get enough of the juxtaposition of the lighthouse and the bridge.

Apparently, Sam could.

They both were looking for rocks to throw in the water.

And then Otis ran away.

Pleased with the distance he had put between me and him.

Happy Halloween!

Well, sort of. The boys refuse to wear costumes this year. Sam has been saying for weeks that he didn't want to be a pumpkin. We must have really scarred him last year. Even though we told the boys that they didn't have to be what they were last year, they remained obstinate.

The best we could do is get them to wear name tags to trick people into thinking they were the other brother. And even then, not really. Sam refused to wear his yesterday at Amelia's party. And today, we had to bribe them with the promise of cookies to wear the stickers. And these are kids who love stickers!

Nice sunglasses though.

But if Sam and Otis refuse to dress up, no problem. Because Carrie and Amy F are more than willing to pick up the slack and dress up ... as Sam and Otis!

Aunt Amy, Cousin Leah, Princess, the boys, and I visited downtown Brooklyn to see old buses on the first Sunday in October.

Otis was a bit intimidated by the large steering wheel.

Sam loved the yellow bus.

Otis was having a moment.

Otis did one of his patented fall backwards protest.

Sam was left to wonder what the heck was wrong with his brother.

Oh Otis.

He eventually calmed down and we walked a block to check out the annual Atlantic Antic. After eating some lunch in front of the former detention center, the boys and Princess enjoyed a moment.

A Trip to Stone Barns

Usually I like to post the photos I take in order. But somehow I missed some photos from early October. So the next two posts are a bit out of order. This first installment is from a trip to Stone Barns. Sujan and I hadn't been there since 2009 and it was fun to get back. Thanks again to Nena for hooking us up!

We didn't get too many good pictures on this venture. But we did get a few.

Upon arrival, the boys enjoyed some yummy apple cider.

On our way out, Sam posed by the blue tractor while Otis and I were trudging through mud and looking at cows on our way to the car.

Yo Gabba Gabba, Take 2

For the second straight year, we took the boys to see Yo Gabba Gabba Live. We talked it up for weeks and the boys were excited.

Although while we were waiting for the subway, the boys were pensive. Otis even said he didn't want to go.

Sujan scored us some amazing tickets in the 6th row. Brobee!

Sam was fine for the first couple of minutes until the streamers were shot out. He thought it was firecrackers. He hates firecrackers.

Sujan convinced him to stay for another minute but then he had a meltdown.

Otis watched the first half with this exact same pose/look on his face.

Sujan wandered the lobby area with a miserable Sammy.

For the 2nd half, Sujan was on Otis duty. He wanted to leave though and they left right after Biz Markie. I was up in the 3rd level because Sam kept saying he wanted to go upstairs.

Although what he really wanted to do was hang out in the lobby and not be anywhere near the performance.

We left before the show was over. Over the past 10 days, they have repeatedly mentioned how they didn't like the show. They say they only like Yo Gabba at home. What's the deal?

A Visit Upstate

It had been too long since we had seen our pals Jim, Pam, Nora, and Miles. The last time we saw them, they lived in Brooklyn. Now they live somewhere upstate. Far far away.

Over Columbus Day Weekend, they had a number of people over.

Sam was excited to take the trip. He loves Ping Pong.

Otis had to get the hang of it before fully agreeing to like it.

First Art Class

While the boys have gone to a couple of art classes at the Y, and a smattering of music offerings, they have never officially been signed up for a real class. That is, until now.

Before they went to their first class though, they decided to impress their mom with their lego prowess.

Sujan and Tina, their nanny, took them to class. At first, they were unsurprisingly reticent. But by the time, Sujan left to go to work, they were completely in love.

Governors Island: A Walk to the Water with Sam

After the ladderball fun, Sam was ready to explore the island a little. First up - the water and the Statue of Liberty.

Get this guy a magazine cover already.

I placed the poor guy on the fort so I could take some pictures. He was game for the good photo op.

As a reward, I bought him some ice cream. I had every intention of getting some for Otis but it didn't happen. In the following days, Sam repeatedly mentioned how he had ice cream on Governors Island but I don't think Otis believed him.

It was the day before SHR's b-day. What better way to celebrate Mom and the end of summer with a trip to Governors Island?

Otis wore his frog backpack. Sam carried the monkey backpack.

With my last day before going back to school, it was the right time to go to the zoo.

Sam can't get enough of his Orioles bag that Phoebe made for him. He put a metrocard and Toby the train in it. He carried the monkey though.

Otis doesn't quite have the hang of how he's supposed to wear the bag.

Some relaxing time. I love two things about these pictures. I love that Otis wanted to be tucked in. And I love that Sam was pointing out all the food that he recognized in the magazine and then some that he wanted to be in the magazine. I'm pretty sure there weren't pictures of bagels and cream cheese in the BBQ issue.

The boys were missing the beach after Cape Cod so Erik and I took them to Coney Island.

After playtime, we went to Totonno's for some pizza. Otis took a closer look at the Ramones picture.

Even though the boys missed Cape Cod, there was no letdown after the vacation. Who needs boat rides and the beach when you have Thomas stickers?

After taking off the stickers, it was park time. This was taken right before Otis pushed Sam into the sandbox just as he was readying himself to jump in.

Our last day.

Time to go on Jack and Beth's boat before heading back home.
